Another day another giveaway! This time it’s all about the Bubble! No, not that awful jazzy crooner Mickey Bubble, The Exploding Bubble of course! What do you take me for?! ;)
One of Birmingham’s hottest club nights, The Exploding Bubble, is a 60s concept club and one of my absolute favourite places for a boogie! Every time I walk through the doors I feel like I’m literally walking back in time to a real 60s club, it’s an all encompassing experience of sight and sound with one floor of psych, ye ye, garage rock and tripped-out sounds and one absolute soul heaven! Not to mention the amazing visuals, lighting, decor and the majority of the crowd in full colourful 60s garb. It’s like a scene out of Austin Powers but more authentic, and more… how do you say.. groovy baby!
I caught up with Joey Smith, one of the brains behind the Bubble to find out more.
Who is behind the Exploding Bubble and how did you come together?
The idea came about one morning while me, Dave Callahan who is the main man when it comes to the lights and sound and Glyn Preece who is the man behind the soul room were just chewing the fat in urban village, what we wanted to do was have everything in one place and have rooms for different sounds so you have soul and r’n’b in one room and psych, garage and freakbeat in another, the name just popped into my head and we just went from there…
What inspired/motivated you to start The Exploding Bubble?
I think the thing that inspired and motivated me the most was the fact that nearly everyone I spoke to about the bubble before the first one said it wouldn’t work in Brum….
The idea really from the outset was to make it a big event and an experience, to go all out on it on everything from the lighting and decor to getting the best DJs.
Who else is involved and what do they bring to it?
Obviously with the size of the event I couldn’t do it by myself so we have Dave Callahan who is really the unsung hero of the bubble who together with myself designs the decor and how we’ll have the lighting, nick shale for the amazing artwork, My good lady Sarah (Zietz) helps on the social media side and then there’s all the DJs who make the whole thing come together.
What can people expect from the Bubble?
Well I think because were at a new venue it’s going to have a real different feel Which is more like the original 60s underground clubs like U-FO so hopefully people will really dig what were trying to do.
Can anyone go? Or is it for hardcore 60s music & fashion fans only?
Course anyone can join in in the bubble, it’s never really been my scene to alienate people from coming though it obviously is run by heavily 60s influenced people and I would say that is the majority of the crowd is the same, I’ve always thought that if new people don’t get into the scene the scene doesn’t last….
You’ve recently changed venues from Bar 78 to Boxxed, why? Is this a permanent move? What can people expect from the new venue?
Yeah we’re excited about the venue change, it came about more to do with what the people wanted, we were having a few issues with the way the bar was being handled so we thought this was as good a time as any to mix things up and change the feel…
Can you give me a top 10 Bubble dance-floor fillers (perhaps 5 from each floor)?
Well I’m usually running round like my heads in fire so I miss most the sounds but I would go with…
Soul room 1) Magic Touch- Melbar Moore 2) Mojo Working- Jimmy Smith 3) Zu Zu Man - Zu Zu Blues Band 4) Just Can’t Wait- Skip Robinson 5) In Love- Tony Galla
Then the psych-garage room
1) Garden Odyssey Enterprise- Sad and Lonely 2) Turnstyle- Riding A Wave 3) Mickey Finn- Garden Of My Mind 4) Tintern Abbey- Vacuum 5) Thane Russal- Security
You’re in a band ‘The Exploding Sound Machine’, is there a tie-in with the club? Tell me a bit about them?
Well the band came from the scene that the emerged from the bubble club happening, the machine is obviously 60s psych influenced but we still try to make it contemporary, it’s going really well at the moment and were going into the studio with new indie pendant label early next year
What else is in the pipeline for the Exploding Bubble and what can we look forward to in the new year?
There’s big plans for the bubble next year but I want to keep everyone guessing so you’ll have to wait and see…
